I believe this is one of the
zines of the ABC No Rio zine series, regarding of
course the famous social center in New York. This one is about the foundation
of the place. It's the story of some artists back in 1979 that wanted to find
a home for their art and squatted a building without knowing that this would
be the birth of one of the most famous and long time lived art/punk/social
center ever. It describes the first days of the squatting and the efforts of
the city council and the police to shut it down. It is also about how they
managed to get the press and the community on their side and how this led the
city giving a building to the squatters. It also describes some of the events
that took place after its establishment and the struggling to make the local
community participate. Apart from the story, the zine gives you a great
understanding on the political/social picture of that time and place and makes
you see that this wasn't just a art movement but also a political expression.
It can be found at various
distros, like Microcosm Publishing and others. If you can't find it, e-mail
me.

Chris has been making zines forever. You know why? Because he's good at it. And although I haven't read any zines of his for about 8 years, I feel like I'm holding an issue of Aversion again. Great crusty, anarcho-punk zine. You will find articles on Punk and Desorden Collective, Cardiff Anarchist Network, Black Bloc and ID cards. Also interviews of Ruin and Extinction of Mankind and a lot of reviews of albums and zines. Agitate / PO Box 202 / Shipley / BD18 3WB / UK

Two girls squatters from Manchester released this fabulous and moving zine. They've put some anarchism, feminism, direct action, squatting and living issues and mixed it all pretty well. You will find some personal stories and confessions, a letter to a neighbor living next door to their squat, experiences on living in a community of a squatted building, a piece on alternatives to commercial sanitary products, two vegan recipes and other nice stuff. The layout is pretty nice as well; half typed, half handwritten (a bit tough to read some times because of the handwritten pieces, but if you preserve you'll make it). They don't have an address right now cause I think they have been evicted, but I hope they'll soon find a new place to stay. You can ask for it at

DIY Hardcore punk, Crust, Thrash, Anarcho, Political/Personal writing. That is written on the cover and that is exactly what it is. A fucking amazing PUNK zine. Where should I start? An interview on Magdie collective/squat in Dublin, a Copenhagen scene report, interviews with The Dagda, Die Kreuzen, and Conor Dervin (a guy who's putting up gigs in ireland, GGI festival and other punk stuff). There is also a "10 reasons I hate cops" article, 7 pages long, a great travel diary of his quests around europe (a lot of drinking, smoking, hitchhiking included, you have been warned) and much more personal writing, some criticism on the punk scene and its members, politics, reviews and everything else a crust punk zine should have. The layout is great, typical crusty, lots of skulls and bones in the cover, cool pictures and most importantly.. black color everywhere!! This is pretty old but you can still find it in some distros. Try to get it. Cormy, the guys who's doing it also plays in the bands Nuclear Death Terror (crust) and The Assassinators (melodic punk rock). Both will blow your mind off. This is a hardcore / straight edge zine, coming from the UK but not in the form of a music zine: interviews, reviews etc. This is more writing about HC and sXe, sometimes serious and sometimes funny. It has some guides on putting out records, touring and feeding bands and more, many writings on sXe, some of them are extremely funny plus some criticism on the hardcore scene putted in a very funny way. In every corner you will find jokes on hardcore kids plus some hilarious drawings (Christian hardcore and more). There is also an article about the non existent punk scene in the Middle East (based on the authors travel there), a funny as fuck piece on why Ray Cappo is better that Jesus Christ and many more writings. This is a very interesting read; even if you're not into hardcore this is very enjoyable mainly because of the way it is written. To be precise, although it's a hardcore related zine, it doesn't seem to be taken too serious by its author, which is a good thing in by opinion. In this issue, Kitty Chronic offers a retrospective of 2005 through a social and personal standpoint. She debates whether enemies of freedom such as fascists deserve to have freedom of speech but doesn't manage to find an answer, finds the courage to talk about her eating disorder and makes a list of her favourite things. She writes about what punk means to her and other random stuff. It's all handwritten, which makes it more personal also sometimes a pain to read. Write to her. She will be more than happy to get your thoughts. She also has a band, check them out!

This is an issue of Exotic Underground but since it is about South America it is called Exotica Subterranea. This is a very good introduction to the Latin America punk scene. It has an interview with Octavio and Jose, two random guys, one from Mexico and the other from Colombia, who both lived in the United States. They talk about their countries, why and how they went to the states, why people from latin america migrate to there, the problems they have etc. It's a very interesting interview on a subject that most of us europeans and i'm sure most americans do not really know much about. Apart from that there is a travel diary from the author's trip to Colombia. People he met, places he have seen, gigs he went to etc. An interview giving some light on the oi scene in Colombia and finally a number of record and zine reviews from latin america. As I said this this is a great intro to latin american punk. Besides the zine, Fred with his label and distro is releasing and distributing records by bands from all over the world. You should also check his book Discography of Eastern European punk music 1977-1999 and the online Discography of Asian punk music.

Giantess #5 (28p, A5, 1$, english)

Cancade is a very talented writer. In this zine there is as single story. A fiction story based on the real incident where a little girl became a human torch. Apart from the story, Cancade debates whether writers have the right to take a real story, twist it around and come up with a story that is neither fictional nor real. What if the boundaries between fiction and reality are not clear? Because usually they are not. If you have any thoughts on this, I'm sure she will be glad to hear from you. This zine also has beautiful layout, so simple yet so nice. And the drawings are lovely as well.

I don't know if this is actually the name of the zine. To be honest, I don't even know whether you'll consider this a zine. I got it from the zinefest in Manchester and I love it. Five stories in it, 4 of them simply drawn comic stories while the remaining one is regarding the destruction of civilization that happened. Look for it. You can also copy and distribute it to your friends. Little zines like this should go around.

In
this mini-zine, Melanie finds the carriage to write about her miscarriage.
It describes her experience and also the days before and after, the physical
and emotional sufferance that she went through and about her companion Nate
who was always there for her. This is an issue that most of us guys don't
know much about and do not really understand. A nice and sensitive read for
everyone.

The guys of immi zine once again did a great job. They changed into A4 (unfortunately I am a big fan of A5) and included more articles in greek than on the previous issues (half of it is in greek and half of it in english now) and more personal articles. Part of the zine is still focused on music. You will find interviews with Smalltown, No Respect and Zegota, a mini tour report of 925, a Latvian scene report and a bunch of music, gig and zine reviews. Plus an article on diy ethics, a report straight from the upraised suburbs of paris and many more on social/political issues. Download the first two issues from their website and support their effort.

This
is one of the few punk/hardcore zines that are still published in Greece.
Due to the luck of interest in zines in Greece, it is now switched to
English. It's a well written hardcore zine with Youth Crew and hardcore (not
macho) attitude. In this issue you will find interview with Struggle
Against, Step Apart (just after they disband), Luca from Countdown Records,
Strike First and from the local bands Bootstroke, Toxica Apovlita and Mute
the Silence. Plus there are some personal writings and views, photography
and comic art and loads of music reviews. Another plus is that it's printed
on recycled paper. The guy behind the zine, Apostolis”xhumanflyx” is also
the lead singer of the band Disharmonic, runs a distro and organizes gigs
under the name of “word's appreciated kitch” under which this zine is
printed as well.

I'm not going to bother to introduce this. You already know it and, if you're into punk and into zines and you don't, shame on you. Just order it and you'll see why. Interviews, articles, scene reports, hundreds of reviews and a million other things. MRR is and always will be the ultimate punk zine.

This is one big story, a part of the author's life, separated in chapters. It's about him moving from one place to the other, places he stayed, people he met, bands he started, efforts to tour, hitchhiking, getting drunk and other punk stuff. This is a very bizarre way of writing, reflecting his life. Try to reach at: B. Menac / 37 Mulberry st / Ashevilee NC 29104 / USA

For some reason I’ve missed reviewing the first issue of Moutza zine, a great new greek zine. For starter, this is absolutely punk rock. Take a deep breath and dive into the content: interviews with Magrudergrind, Trencher, The Amphetameanies, Vodka Juniors (+Cannonball Records), Mouthbreather, Hjerte Stop, Bombenalarm, Transistor Transistor, Spild Af Vinyl (+Death Token); Burial’s Japanese tour report, gig photography (by Mateus Mondin and Daigo Olivia) plus news and music reviews. The printing and layout is absolutely professional (reminds me of Maximum RNR, Last Hours etc) since the guys behind this zine have a big history on zines. Actually this is half the team of the infamous greek Immigrant zine. The biggest part of the zine is written in english (only the opening columns and an interview is in greek), so don’t hesitate if you can’t read greek. Do NOT miss this one.

Negro #1 (6p, A5, free, greek)

New political comic a few pages long from Greece. It's been created of a single person and is worth checking out. Comes with a sticker. You can download it at:
http://www.diymusic.org/pubimg/negrozine1.pdf negro_zine@yahoo.gr

This is something new. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a punk zine from Greece focusing on crust and grind or as it self described on the cover "Skull Crushing D-beat Holocaust zine". In this first issue you will find interviews with Dir Yassin and Cut Your Throat, articles about Myspace, christianity, companies that do testing on animals and the article "Anarcho-punk, the ALF and the miners’ strike - a cautionary tale from the 1980s" and of course music and zine reviews. The layout -as expected- is dark and gloomy as it should be. There have been some minor mistakes on the layout and the printing (which is otherwise very good, no photocopies here) but this was the first attempt and I’m sure that the next issue will be improved. Let’s hope there will be a follow up.

Sapilla #5 (46p, A4, 3euros, greek)

Another issue of this amazing comic. Full of love, hope, childishness, emotions, colors (although most of it is in black and white), faith. Socially aware, funny and touching. Many creators with different styles. One of the best of its kind. You can also find art of the person mainly responsible for it in many other greek zines and cds. They have a new website up, check it out:
http://www.sapilla.gr/ sapilla_zine@yahoo.com

After a yearly delay, the new issue of Sapilla zine is finally out. This is a "split" zine but both parts are created by the same person. The first half is the known punk comic "Sapilla". Black and white comics dealing with modern life issues suck as alienation, disaffection, hypocrisy, the cruelty on animals and more. Compared to the comics on previous issues the subjects and the comic style are deeper, rawer and are touching darker parts of the soul. The second part, "Melodia tis Orgis" is a music zine, featuring strictly diy bands. You will find interviews of Straightjacket Fit, Kalashnikov, Μεθυσμένα Ξωτικά [Methismena Ksotika, Drunk Gremlins] and Tug. Also articles on Kill the Cat and Ανατέλλων Τρόμος [Anatellon Tromos, Raising Terror] and some reviews. The layout and the quality of the zine is the extremely good, the best so far, on glossy thick paper, very "professional". And it’s not just that, it comes with many extras. Each copy contains five cards and a 6-track cd (not cd-r, in a beautiful case) with songs of the bands on Melody of Rage. Overall a great work.

Spat Back #3 (22p, A6, free/trade, english)

The third issue of this cute personal mini zine. It has Emma's personal views on subject like punk, feminism, the girls' "roles" inside the punk scene and such. It also has some more personal writing, like the aftermath of a break up and finding and expanding your beliefs, some DIY tutorials (how to make a bug out of an old pair of trousers and stencils), a nice recipe and more. Another plus is Emma's great little drawings and writing style. This is a very nice read afterall. Emma has recently started a zine distro, check it out at:

Spat Back #4 (14p, A6, free/trade, english)

This
is the forth issue of Emma's mini zine or shall I say the "starting 2006"
issue? This one is different than the previous issues. It is a "to do"
list for 2006. Things like watching less tv, start a band and travel; put
together in Emma's special way, with cute drawings and short texts. It is
a very nice little reading. I personal believe that new year resolutions
rarely work but it is actually a good way to put new goals in your life.
And by the end of the year if you have actually succeeded even few of
them, it's a success.

This comic comes from Leeds and only 100 copies were printed so you better hurry up and order one. Four stories (the eye in the bathtub, it kills cats, it's true.. and an untitled one) in 12 pages and a couple of nice photos. Dark, weird, morbid. See the first two issues on the website. The guy behind this comic is also into diy filmmaking. Ask him about his videos or order it at the same address.

This
zine counts more or less 22 years of life. It was started by two friends in
Southampton, UK and it is still based there and written by the same people
(still friends as they say). It covers mostly the UK punk and hardcore scene
and more particular the south cost scene. In this issue you will find
interviews with Paint It Black, Dirty Love, The Black Veins, The Fire Still
Burns, Varukers and Abandon Ship. Also a thorough report of Pilger/Paint it
Black 2005 tour, Wasted 2005 fest report, album and zine reviews and
shitloads of other texts and writings. SD is also a label/distro. Check

Pretty old (November 2004), but still great, from Leeds, UK I had it on my shelf for a couple of weeks prior to my trip to the Manchester zinefest, on the train to which I managed to read this. All of it? Not all of it. How can you read an 80 page heavy text zine in a few hours? Absolutely great stuff. From lightweight texts and stories (like love vs. sex) to band interviews (Endstand and others), tour reports (Hero Dishonest in Russia/Belarus tour and others) and a great amount of gig, music, zine, book and dvd reviews.
